Construction of Tire Recycling Plant Starts Next Month

MBABANE – Construction of the proposed E60 million tyre recycling plant is expected to begin in earnest next month, following its approval by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade.

This was disclosed by Wilsiger Investments Director William Mtetwa yesterday. He said the investment had been stalled by the finalisation of a deed of sale at the farm in Sidvokodvo, a licence to operate the plant and classification of the farm into a commercial site.

“We now have all licences in order and will start clearing the site at the beginning of July. An advert for 34 jobs to be available for site clearance will be issued in due course, since we are now ready to begin operations,” said Mtetwa.

PPC to Use Waste Tyres as Alternative Fuels

PPC has concluded an agreement to source waste tyres from the Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (Redisa) for use at its De Hoek cement plant in Piketburg, Westerm Cape. PPC is also investigating the possibility of using waste tyres in some of its other plants, according to Azola Lowan, the executive for investor relations and strategy.

Tyre-recycling Sets Off on Road to Environmental Sustainability

A FIVE-year initiative to create a sustainable industry to recycle millions of scrapped tyres every year, is making progress and attracting international interest.

Estimates of the number of abandoned tyres lying across South Africa range from 60-million to 100-million. Another 11-million or so are added to the stockpile each year as vehicle owners buy new ones. Many of the scrapped tyres end up in landfills, while others are burnt for heat or left lying in the open.

Reacting to what it considers a serious health hazard and a danger to the environment, the Department of Environmental Affairs two years ago ordered that the tyre industry should be the first in South Africa to develop an industry waste management plan.
